Characteristics and Gemological information :

Natural pearls are made of nearly 100% calcium carbonate and conchiolin. They form when a microscopic intruder enters a bivalve mollusk, causing it to secrete layers of these substances to cover the irritant. This process creates a pearl, which can be various shapes, though perfectly round ones are rare.
Pearls are hard, glistening objects found in the soft tissue of shelled mollusks. The ideal pearl is round and smooth, but baroque (irregularly shaped) pearls are also common. High-quality natural pearls are valuable and have long been symbols of rarity and beauty.
